Craigmillar Castle

Edinburgh's secret Castle - well worth a visit!

Away from the hustle and bustle of city centre Edinburgh, enjoy a free day out at the castle that provided a retreat from Scotland’s capital. Admire the views and explore the fascinating site.

Craigmillar Castle, often referred to as Edinburgh’s ‘other castle’ was once a safe haven for Mary, Queen of Scots, and holds many captivating tales. With something for all the family to enjoy, just a short journey from the city centre, it’s perfect for a historic day out.

Top tips:

  • Parking is limited at the castleand spaces are on a first come first served basis and where possible if visitors can arrive via public transport or on foot this would help alleviate issues. There are good public transport links to nearby Old Dalkeith Road (Edinburgh Royal Infirmary) or Peffermill Road.
  • The site is open for you to enjoy but there are currently some access restrictions in place as a precautionary measure. The site also has uneven ground, including grassed areas, and steep spiral stairs.
